Did you know that bowel cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, yet it’s the fourth most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia. It’s also the country’s second deadliest cancer, with one in 13 Australians predicted to develop the disease in their lifetime. And the news for Australians aged 25-44 is bleaker still, with it taking the title as the country’s deadliest cancer and the seventh underlying cause of death overall for people in that age group.
If it was an animal, it’d be up there with eastern brown snakes, saltwater crocodiles, and Sydney funnel-web spiders in terms of the risk to human life.
And contrary to the delight most Australians feel at beating the world, especially in the sporting arena, this is one medals table that we certainly don’t want to top. Yet we’re punching above our weight once more, with one of the highest rates of bowel cancer in the world.
Around 30% people who develop bowel cancer have either a hereditary contribution, family history, or a combination of both. The other 70% of people have no family history of the disease and no hereditary contribution. So, just because there’s no history of it in your family, it doesn’t mean you’re safe. Early detection has proven to be critical, with 99% of cases detected early able to be treated successfully.
Helping Bowel Cancer Australia to achieve its goals
With bowel cancer affecting so many and with early detection so important, imei is a proud sponsor of Time is Precious. Established in 2019 by Amy Graham and Sara Jones after the passing of Sara’s stepfather Rob Bosch to the disease, aged 50, Time is Precious is committed to assisting Bowel Cancer Australia to further its mission. The charity is punching above its weight in terms of raising funds for advancing our understanding of how to prevent, detect, and treat bowel cancer. This includes promoting the need for further research, heightening GP awareness, and increasing access to colonoscopies.
The centrepiece of the charity’s fundraising calendar is the Time is Precious charity ball for 2025. In memory of the late Rob Bosch, Time is Precious is hoping to raise $100,000 at this year’s ball on Saturday 5 April. The event’s line-up includes great entertainment, a variety of fundraising activities, including live and silent auctions, and an exclusive raffle, as well as a three-course meal and open bar for the evening.
As a Platinum sponsor of Time is Precious Ball 2025, imei is inviting you to suit up or frock up and join us at this important fundraising event by booking a seat or even a table or two to help this worthy cause.
